Sinergy haven't even released their debut album yet and already the buzz about the band is considerable.  Formed by Kimberly Goss, who has served time with a number of well-known dark and black metal bands over the years, it also features members of Children of Bodom and Mercyful Fate.  Based on the one advance track I've heard, the style of Sinergy is more closely related to the classic heavy metal sounds of the 80s like Judas Priest and Warlock, but with a definite modern punch.

After returning to her new home in Finland after a trek through the US, Kimberly was kind enough to provide some insight into her work...

What inspired you to form Sinergy?  Who all will be involved in the band?
Jesper (from In Flames) and I met in August '97 on tour in Europe when I was playing with Dimmu Borgir.  We became really good friends and began talking about doing some kind of side project, but after I parted ways with Dimmu, I decided to turn Sinergy into a full-time band with a complete line-up.  I then recruited all the other members, which include Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom), Sharlee D'Angelo (Mercyful Fate), and Ronny Milianowicz on drums.

Why the name 'Sinergy'?
I wanted to have a catchy band name which was only one word.  It took me a couple of weeks, but I finally decided on Sinergy.  There isn't any deeper meaning behind why I chose this name!

Did you consider any other names when you found out 'Synergy' was already taken?
No.  Sharlee and I went to a pub and sat for about 2 hours writing down different ways to spell Sinergy.  You wouldn't believe how many ways we found to spell this damn word!  In the end, we thought that 'Sinergy' looked best.

Is the track "Beware the Heavens" indicative of the style of the rest of the album?
Pretty much yes, although we are four song writers in this band (everyone except Sharlee), so there are of course slight variations in our style.

Will there be any cover tunes on the album?  If not, what would be your first choice for a song to cover?
No.  Alexi and I have been talking about doing a cover tune in the future.  We've thought about Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It" or Ozzy's "Shot In The Dark," but nothing has been decided yet.  Be sure that you will definitely see a cover song by us in the future, though!

Tell me about some of the lyrics - what they are about and what inspired them.
I'm not one of these "sensitive poets" who sit and write these really "deep and depressive" lyrics which nobody will understand.  I'm addicted to TV and movies so I've gotten a lot of my ideas this way.  Two of my songs are based on episodes of the TV show "The Outer Limits."  I have another song based on my favorite show, "Xena- Warrior Princess," and then I do have a couple of songs based on my personal life experiences.

Do you have any tour plans set in place yet?
We've been offered four tours so far in Europe for the Autumn of this year, but I haven't decided which one we will do yet.  Only one of the offers looks interesting (sorry, I don't want to say with which bands we've been offered, in case it doesn't happen, then there won't be any confusion!).

Where are you from originally?
I was born in Los Angeles, but I was raised in Chicago.  I moved to Norway when I was 17 years old and lived there for about 2 1/2 years, then I moved to Gothenburg, Sweden to form Sinergy.  Now I'm 21 years old and I just moved to Finland together with my boyfriend/guitarist Alexi.  I will definitely continue Sinergy without any problems though!

How did you first get involved in the metal scene?
Well, my mother went to see Alice Cooper live when she was pregnant with me.  This is true!  I was born to be metal.

Could you give me a brief run-down of your past work?
Hmm...  I've played in Avernus, Ancient, Therion, Dimmu Borgir and most recently I played session keyboards for Children of Bodom in September '98 for their European tour.  Sinergy is all I think about nowadays.  This is the first band I've started on my own, and it just feels so right!  I'm grateful to have had the chance with the other bands, though, because if it weren't for them, I wouldn't be where I am today!

How long have you been singing?
Since I took my first shower!  Basically, my whole life, but this is the first time I'm a lead singer in a professional band.  I used to sing in school musicals when I was younger and I always had the lead role.

What singers have inspired you the most over the years?
Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry and the Wilson sisters from Heart.  I adore Bruce Dickinson and Eric Adams as far as male singers are concerned.

Have you had any formal training playing keyboards or singing?
No.  I have taught myself everything I know.

Do you play any other instruments?  Are there any you'd like to learn eventually?
My boyfriend started to give me guitar lessons last week.  When I was in school, I played the French horn, but I forget everything about it.

Why did you move to Finland?
I think that's obvious!

How do you like it there so far?
Honestly, it's pretty depressing here in the winter because there's only one or two hours of daylight and there's so much snow.  Finland has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.  Now I really understand why.  Now summer is approaching and then we only have one or two hours of darkness!  This is really weird for me.  I mean, you go to a club at 11 pm and it's still broad daylight, and when you leave the club at 3 or 4 am, the sun has already set and risen again during the few hours you were in there!  Gothenburg is by far the coolest city I've ever lived in.

How did your recent trip to the States go?
Great!  Alexi and I went to Chicago, then drove down to Dallas to visit Mercyful Fate in the studio.  We also went to Roswell, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and Hollywood!  I really miss it.

What was the first concert you ever went to?  What was the best concert?
Does that Alice Cooper thing count?  It's hard to say what the best was, but it would probably have to be this German band called Rammstein in Wels, Austria in July '97.  That was awesome!

What are your main interest/hobbies outside of music?
TV, movies, Play Station, and any form of traveling.  It's really easy to travel when I live in Europe.  I can just take a boat to Sweden for about 30 dollars round trip or I get discount airfare to the country of my choice.  I love it!

What are your long-term goals for your career?
I'd like to get a more steady line-up with musicians who don't play in any other band except Sinergy.  Also, I want to tour and record as many albums as possible for the rest of my life.  I want Sinergy to become a household name!

What is in the immediate future for you and for Sinergy?
I will go to the Nuclear Blast office in Germany on June 7th to start doing interviews before the album is released.  The official release date is June 21st.  Perhaps it might be delayed in the States, who knows?  You can check out the "official" Sinergy homepage for the latest new at:  http://sinergy.power-metal.com/
