While it may seem at times as though the great era of electro-industrial music has past, there are in fact a number of great, new artists out there to be discovered.  One good example is DeadJump, a one-man Brazilian project that has been making some incredibly hard and abrasive electro in recent years.  Alexandre G. Ramos is the mastermind at work here, creating the dark beats and rhythms on his debut, Virtual Masturbation of a Bastard Leader, and more recently on the Causa Mortis remix album.

Ale is also a very personable and gracious guy and he was kind enough to respond to my inquiries about his music recently…

To begin with, how did you decide upon the name 'DeadJump'?
Well, DeadJump is an indefinite name. I think it makes people think about it!  For me, DeadJump sounds good in our ears so... I decided it’s a good name for an electro/industrial band.

How did you first get involved in making music?
I began in an electro band called Brutal Divergenz in 1995.  I just sang.  We released one demo tape and did some performances.  It was an experience, I learned a lot in that time, but we decided to go different ways, and so.... DeadJump was born!

How did you hook up with 4D?
I knew Julio for a long time and he always thought about founding a label. When he founded 4D Records, he asked me to help and... I accepted!  The main idea was to find good Brazilian bands, but we get tapes from all over the world.

Please explain the meaning behind the title of your debut CD, Virtual Masturbation of a Bastard Leader.
Virtual Masturbation is a pleasure inside of a motherfucker's mind.  They have bad behaviour to fuck humanity. Murderers, killers, rapists and all fucking crazy men have Virtual Masturbation. Bastard Leader is a corrupt person in power.  He has control and power over the weak population, unfortunately…

What inspired you to release a remix album for your second CD?
I have made contact with great bands, so exchanging remixes is a normal attitude today.  I don’t like to make remixes and not see them released.  All of the remixes I get from these friendships I release on compilations or albums.  I think it’s a great opportunity for the electro scene.

Also, please explain the meaning behind its title, Causa Mortis.
Well, I’m studying Law and we have thousands of these "Latin Expressions."  We said:  what was the Causa Mortis? or how did he die?  It’s the same thing, but Lawyers speak with technical phrases.  The next album will be called "Post Mortem."

How did you get in touch with the various bands remixing your work (Clone DT, X On Mind, Noxious Emotion, etc.)?
When I listen to a good band, I write and ask for more information about them.  We trade CDs, talk about musical concepts and make a friendship.  So, remixes are a consequence!  Today, I have good friends:  Oliver ( Sleepwalk ), Claus ( P.N.E.), Tommy T ( Diverge ), Fabricio ( Biopsy), David ( V.B.O.), Danijel ( Injury ), Ricardo (X On Mind ), Paulo ( Clone DT ), Julio ( Front Runner ), Mike ( Noxious Emotion ), Ingo ( Mortal Constraint ) and I have contacted new bands.  I like this!

Do you record in a studio or do you have a setup at home?
I work in a studio.  I’m a radio operator and we have good machines.  I record my songs into a Macintosh ( Pro Tools ).  I do it all by myself. Maybe at some point in the future I will get my own studio at home.

What can you tell me about the industrial/electro scene in Brazil?  Are you on good terms with most of the other bands?
There’s no scene here, unfortunately, just some lovers of Electro/Industrial music like me!

What is your opinion of the current worldwide industrial/electro scene?
I like it.  Brazil is so far away from Europe and the USA, but today we have Internet and now we have more facilities to get in contact.  I like these scenes, and I hope DeadJump's popularity grows inside these countries.

What types of music do you listen to for your personal enjoyment?  Anything that might surprise fans of Dead Jump?
I love electro/industrial music, but for now I have listened to different styles:  my newest CDs are:  F.L.A ( Implode ), ISC ( Face the Fear ), Biopsy ( Third Stroke ), Neuroactive ( Fiber Optic Rhythm ), Funker Vogt ( Killing the Time Again ), and more that  I don’t remember right now! Surprises??  Yes!  I like Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, Meshuggah, Busta Rhymes, Korn, Sepultura, Soulfly, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Fear Factory, NIN and more....!

What are your favorite pieces of equipment for composing music?  Is there anything you'd really like to get at some point in the future?
I like my AKAI.  It’s just an S2000 Model, but I like it a lot.  I like the JP8000 and JV Series.  By now, I have in my mind to get a new computer, but at some time in the future I will buy these machines I mentioned above.  Oh!  Almost forgot!  I like my JUNO, too....!

Have you performed live yet?  If not, would you like to at some point?
No.  When I was a member of Brutal Divergenz, we performed, maybe 4 or 5 times, I don’t remember.  I have in my mind to play at some point in the future.

Do you ever write music that doesn't fit into the Dead Jump style?  If so, is there a possibility of a side-project in the future?
Yes!  I manipulated samples and noises in an industrial band called CHIPSET 0, but I’m very busy so, I decided to stop for now.  I will come back to it in the future.  I want to compose music with my first band Brutal Divergenz!  Maybe this year I will have new tracks!

Who does the artwork for your CDs?
V.M.B.L. was Cesar Moscoso ( Subcultura webzine ).  Causa Mortis was Julio Saraiva ( 4D ).  I like both works!  The new artwork isn’t finished yet, but the work is Julio’s hand.

Can you explain some the concepts behind the lyrics?
My lyrics are about: humanity, cruelty, deaths and all hypocrisy all over the world.  For example:  Seed Of Deadjump: The man is scared, because the machines have dominated the world; Rhythm Of Death: Are you ready to dance??; Sweeterror: Hallucination, fear and sweeterror; Freak: Vision of a serial killer; Post Mortem: Our destiny....!

What is the typical song-writing process for you like?  Do the lyrics come first or last?
The lyrics come first and then I begin the composition process.

What do you do outside of music?
I work at the University Guarulhos, I’m a radio station operator and I’m studying Law.  In my free time, I work with DeadJump..

What are your long-term goals for DeadJump?
I have in my mind to release a new album, do more interviews, make more remixes, make good friends and get fans all over the world.

Have you started work on your next CD yet?  If so, how do you foresee it differing from the first two?
Yes, my next CD will have 15 or 16 tracks.  The name is "Post Mortem" and you will find some new tracks on compilations:  Repulsive/Seed Of Deadjump ( Sleepwalk Remake ) on We Came From Future ( 4D ); Joke on Black Planet Comp. ( KSM ); Virtual Insanity on Kinetic Instinct ( DSBP ); Freak on  Shelter Comp. ( BASE ASYLUM ).  These last two tracks were taken from Causa Mortis, but they will be included on the next album!  The new tracks are darker than VMBL, but there’s music for all fanz of Electro/Industrial…
